Syrup maker Amos J. Haigh dies at 77
Amos J. Haigh, 77, of Charlotte, a prominent maple syrup maker
in the Vermontville area for many years, died Saturday, July 3,
1999, in Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, Lansing.
He was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Benton Township to Carson and Gladys
(Rodgers) Haigh.
He attended Charlotte High School and took the Kellogg Agriculture
Short Course at Michigan State University.
He owned a farm and retired in 1984 from Aluminum Extrusions in
Charlotte.
He had been a prominent maple syrup maker since 1958 and a member
of the Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival Corp. He also was a
member of the Michigan and International maple syrup associations.
He married Joyce Smith on July 4, 1942. She survives.
Also surviving are sons, Larry Haigh of Bellevue; Garry, Daniel
and Scott Haigh of Charlotte and David Haigh of Sunfield; a
daughter, Sandra S. Pifer of Charlotte; 21 grandchildren; 17
great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Haigh of Charlotte; and a
sister, Cleone Burman of Grand Ledge.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and an infant grandson.
Community involvement, hobbies: Helped to charter three
Farm Bureau discussion groups in Eaton County.
Was an adult adviser in 4-H and FFA and Young People of West
Benton Church. Was an originator of the new West Benton Church.
Helped build the Maple Leaf Barn and the new permanent stage on
Main Street in Vermontville. He and his wife had been in charge of
the maple syrup organization's booth at the Michigan State Fair
for many years. They joined the National Campers and Hikers in
1970 to help with the National Campvention at Irish Hills and were
active in the local camping club chapter. Was an active member of
the Jackson Steelheader fishing club.
Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Pray Funeral Home,
Charlotte.
Services: 3 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial: Needmore Cemetery.
