Canadian Maple Purity Efforts
by Larry Myott

The Regroupement (RCPEQ) in Quebec has announced a new maple marketing effort that will ensure quality and purity of maple products. The program is for member/processors of RCPEQ that subscribe to the program and carry out a detailed grading and inspection program. This program will closely regulate each phase of processing, from the point of receipt of the syrup, to packaging and distribution. Monitoring is being carried out by means of independent inspection audits.

The new distinctive seal includes a sugar maple leaf (not the Canadian maple leaf) and a stylized check mark. It is called "Maple Mark." Only members of Regroupement are going to be eligible to use the mark, but they are quick to point out that the Regroupement is taking in new members.

The Regroupement is charged with the inspection of all bulk maple products in Quebec and this program expands on that program. They have a detailed manual that will be respected by the packers using the logo. Procedures and practices are documented throughout the handling and packing process.

This system is another reason why Vermont and other U.S. producing states must move forward rapidly with registration or certification of maple producers, packers and processors. If we are to continue to compete in the international market arena, U.S. producers must take immediate steps to keep our industry on the cutting edge and ensure absolute quality and purity.
