CARL WITTE passed away on October 7, 2003. Carl had been a maple producer for over 10 years. Carl was our Newsletter editor for four and a half years, from 1994-1998. He and his wife Nita were very involved with woodworking items prior to making maple syrup. They would make crafts, birdhouses and birdbaths and other wood items and sell them at bazaars and craft shows. This led to naming their business “For the Birds and More”. The Witte’s were small producers with a 2 x 6 evaporator and about 300 taps, all on buckets. There was no electricity at the sugarhouse. Since they tapped red maples it took quite a bit more sap to make a gallon of syrup. Although they sold some syrup, most of it was given away. This is a great example of the kind and generous person that Carl was. He is survived by his wife Nita, three children and eight grandchildren. Carl will be greatly missed.
